The Colosseum, Rome

I was born in Shanghai, one of the biggest metropolises in China, and have been living in coastal cities ever since. City and water scenes are my preferred painting subjects. In my watercolours, I focus on light, flow, and texture. I aim to depict the solidness and depth of buildings, the light reflected by the metal objects and the movement of water.

I like to paint backgrounds first, using brushes saturated with water and colour, then apply more colours and decisive strokes to depict lines and shapes and, lastly, often use extremely dry brushes to sweep out the texture. I have been painting for 60 years now. Watercolour has given me confidence and endless happiness. It has become part of me.

Xidan Chen started painting at the age of seventeen. He has initiated and founded many events and organisations, such as the Shanghai Watercolour Association, the Shenzhen Watercolour Society, Shanghai Quanhua Watercolour Art Gallery, and the Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour Biennial Exhibition.

He has exhibited extensively in China and abroad, including Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and Royal Watercolour Society exhibitions in the United Kingdom and National Watercolor Society exhibitions in the United States, winning numerous awards, and has been featured in many leading international art magazines, as well as prime time television programmes in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

As one of China’s foremost watercolourists, he has judged over 100 art shows, the most recent being the prestigious Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour Biennial Exhibition.

Xidan Chen is currently Director of Quanhua Watercolour Art Gallery, Zhujiajiao, President of the Shenzhen Watercolour Society and curator and administrator of the Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour Biennial Exhibition.

In recognition of his services to watercolour internationally, Xidan Chen was made an Honorary Member of the Australian Watercolour Institute in 2010. He is also a member of the National Watercolour Society, USA, Birmingham Watercolour Society, UK, and the China Artists Association.
