The aim of my work is to capture light and line – to distill, to pare. Generally, I like my work to represent sensuality and beauty.
Most of my days are spent in the studio – working, always working – and, after decades, the discoveries continue, light and line drawing me on.
Adrian Lockhart studied art at Launceston Technical College while working full-time, from the age of fifteen, in the art department of the Launceston Examiner newspaper under the mentorship of Alan Langoulant. A multidisciplinary artist working in diverse genres from figurative to abstraction, his practice includes painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture and artist’s books.
Sketching has been an important aspect of his practice, resulting in over 300 sketchbooks that act as both the formations of ideas and diaries. In view of his travelling sketchbooks, Lockhart was asked, in 2018, to lead a group on a sketching tour of Jordan, culminating in an exhibition of landscape paintings and drawings of the Jordan hills at Jacaranda Gallery in Amman. This also stirred his desire to return to Queenstown in the South West region of Tasmania to look afresh at the rugged, majestic beauty of hills and mountains of his childhood.
Lockhart, who is Sydney-based, has held over 37 solo exhibitions, and participated in numerous group exhibitions, in commercial galleries and public institutions in Australia and abroad.
Among the numerous art prizes in which he has been selected as a finalist are the Dobell Drawing Prize; Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing; Kedumba Drawing Award; Manning Regional Gallery Naked and Nude Art Prize; Manly Library Artist Book Award; Cresendo25 Artist Book Award and the Mosman Art Prize.
His work is held in private and public collections in Australia and overseas, including the National Gallery of Australia; New England Regional Art Museum; Maitland Regional Gallery; Orange Regional Gallery; Kedumba Collection; Manly Library; Geelong Library; MONA Library and the Royal Scientific Society of Jordan.
Adrian Lockhart was elected a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute in 2025.
