Road out of Hill End

My fascination with architecture is only matched by an absolute commitment to, and passion for, sketching, painting and etching. With an eye for simplification of detail and an obsession with light, I am increasingly pursuing the ‘less is more’ approach to watercolour with minimal strokes and fresh, colourful pigments applied directly to paper rather than mixed in a palette.

Much of my work has an architectural influence. Drawing constantly in sketchbooks during my world of painting, teaching and travelling, I am always seeking to capture moments by ‘taking a line for a walk,’ always with discrete care to indicate rather than state. My work is influenced primarily by the Impressionists, where the play of light on subjects becomes paramount.

Malcolm Carver graduated in architecture at the University of Technology Sydney and successfully practised that profession for the past 40 years. He has had four solo exhibitions and exhibited with the Australian Watercolour Institute in numerous group exhibitions in Australia and internationally.

Carver travels the world extensively, holding regular painting and architecture tours. He also teaches ‘The Art of Watercolour’ each week in both Sydney and Gosford. Recently, he has developed his own palettes and easels designed specifically for watercolourists.

A member of the Australian Watercolour Institute since 2007 (currently serving on the AWI Executive Committee), Malcolm Carver is a member of the Australian Institute of Architects, a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, President Emeritus of the Ku-Ring-Gai Arts Society and an Associate Member of the Royal Art Society.
