Victoria Dock No. 2

I commenced employment in commercial art then later began a period with the Australian Stevedoring Industry Authority and its successors, which were responsible for the control of stevedoring operations within the shipping industry. In this role, I visited many ports throughout Australia and, during twenty years of service, gained experience that led me to illustrate the various ways of life that have since disappeared from the Australian waterfront.

I believe that the use of watercolour is the most beautiful expression of all mediums and, while it is always challenging and often difficult to express, the rewards are worth the experience.

John Woodland has painted exclusively in watercolour for over forty years. He was educated in The Rocks area of Sydney, where he developed an appreciation of the historical significance of the inner-city buildings, streetscape and harbour. His affinity for the local architecture, as well as the ever-changing scene on the harbour and wharves, frequently finds expression in his imagery. He studied for a short time at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales but is primarily self- taught. He has also conducted classes in watercolour painting with the Eastwood Evening College and the Ryde Art Society.

His numerous awards include the Royal Canberra Art Award, both in the Open and Watercolour categories, the Bright Watercolour Art Award, the Royal Motor Yacht Club Award and the ANL National Maritime Art Award. Recently, he won the Watercolour Prize in the 2017 Singleton Art Prize and was awarded First Prize in the Seascape and Marine category at the 2017 Royal Easter Show.

His work is represented in public and private collections in Australia and abroad.

A member of the Australian Watercolour Institute since 2010, Woodland is also a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales, a Founding Member and Fellow of the Australian Society of Marine Artists and a Professional Member of the International Society of Marine Painters, United States.
